Question: I am in Nigeria at the moment and taking Malarone tablets once a day. On the leaflet you get in the box it states not to take it for longer than 37 days and i have been here since 27th August and will be here till 1oth December is it ok to keep taking Malarone??? Also i am having trouble sleeping at night is this a possible side effect of taking these tablets?
Answer: According to the protocol, Malarone can be taken for up to 28 days, but treatment can be extended with caution until up to 1 year. The potentially fatal risks of a malaria infection outweigh the potential side effects of Malarone and as such we recommend that you keep taking the medicine until your departure. Typical side effects or Malarone are: diarrhea; dizziness; headache; loss of appetite; mouth sores; nausea; stomach pain; vomiting; weakness. Please read the patient leaflet for a full ist of side effects reported to date. If you feel like you are experiencing a side effect that is not listed or if your reaction is severe, please seek medical assistance locally.
